Purim Joy

Florida Sunshine Circle Brings Purim Joy to Hundreds of Holocaust Survivors

'תיכף יראו כל העולם 'ונהפוך הוא

The Pasuk tells us that the oil for the Menorah must be pure, without sediments. This was accomplished by plucking the olives from the top of the tree (where they received the most sunshine). They also pressed them with a mortar rather than grinding them in a mill in order for them to be pure. This was only necessary for the oil of the Menorah. However, concerning the oil used for Menachos - Meal Offerings - Chazal say, "Kasis LaMaor" - "ViLo Kasis LaMinachos" - Pressing was only necessary for the light of the Menorah but not for the oil of Menachos.

The gemara in Megillah 6b states that if one says, "Lo Yagati Umatsasi Al Taamen" - "If one says that he did not toil in Torah but still found success in Torah - do not believe him. The reason being, Torah can only be acquired through great toil. Therefore, do not believe the one who says that he became a Talmud Chachom without working for it. The Ksav Sofer explains this phenomenon with the Drasha of Chazal -, "Kasis LaMaor" - "ViLo Kasis LaMinachos" -

"Kasis LaMaor" - one must press himself and toil for the light of the Torah. However, "ViLo Kasis LaMinachos" - for a livelihood (Menachos) he does not have to toil. He just has to make his Hishtadlus and the rest is from Hashem. One can work the minimum and become wealthy and visa versa one can work day and night and still remain poor. His toil is not the key to his success.

The Secret of Joy - Nice article by Rabbi Pinchos Lipschutz with an inspiring story if you scroll down to the end of his post.

I received this message this morning regarding the rains in Israel.

The Arbiters of Truth

I am sure most of you know the story abut the gossiper who felt bad about speaking badly and went to the rabbi to ask what to do. The rabbi said to bring a feather pillow, and to scatter all the feathers. Then the rabbi requested that the gossiper should gather all the feathers that had spread far and wide. Of course, it was an impossible task. Once the words went out, it was virtually impossible to repair the damage wrought by the gossiper's speech. I was reminded of the anecdote this morning when I read about the New York Times updating a story in which they initially wrote about Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick, who died a day after the riot at Washington D>C> in January. On January 8th, the NYT wrote, "Mr. Sicknick was struck with a fire extinguisher, according to two law enforcement officials."
On Febrary 12, the same paper amended the article with an update, "UPDATE: New information has emerged regarding the death of the Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick that questions the initial cause of his death provided by officials close to the Capitol Police."

USA Today published a factcheck piece titled Fact check: Democratic leaders honored officer Brian Sicknick at U.S. Capitol ceremony In the middle of the article, there is an offer:

Fact or fiction? Find out the truth about news stories you see online.

So, if you want to find out the truth, you should register your email to receive the truth from the arbiters of the truth. However, in the same article, the authors write about Brian Sicknick, "He was struck in the head by a fire extinguisher during the riots and died from his injuries the following day." So, am I supposed to believe these arbiters of truth after there is little basis in fact for what was written about how he died? Can someone factcheck the factcheckers?

Ani Ma'amin

"Im Kesef Talveh Es Ami HeAni Imach; When you lend money to the poor man in my nation." (Mishpatim 22:24) This is the mitzva of lending money to the poor. The Kotzker Rebbe learns this pasuk B'Derech Drush.

The Mishna in Pirkei Avos (6:9) says that when a person leaves this world, "Ein Milavin Lo LiAdam Kesef V'Zahav... Ela Torah U'Maasim Tovim; His money does not accompany him, only his Torah and good deeds." The Kotzer says, "We find a remez to this in our pasuk. 'Im Kesef Talveh Es Ami; If a person dies and finds that his money is accompanying him on his journey to the next world, Es HeAni Imoch; it is not the money you enjoyed, but rather the money that you gave to a poor person.' That money will stay with you for eternity."
