The four kosos

Chazal instituted the Mitzvah of the four Kosos which represent the four terms used for the redemption v’Hotzeisi v’Hotzalti v’Goalti v’Lakachti. What is the significance of the four terms for the redemption? Why wasn’t one term for the redemption sufficient?

The Maharal says (Gevuras Hashem 30) that each term for the redemption represented a different aspect of our redemption. We were first redeemed from the affliction of the backbreaking work that the Egyptians imposed on us, however we still remained servants to Mitzrayim. Subsequently we were redeemed from servitude of Mitzrayim but we still were sojourners in a land that was not ours. We were then completely released from Mitzrayim but we had not yet entered into the covenant of Hashem Yisborach. When we entered into the covenant of Hashem at the time of Matan Torah that was the fourth and final step of the Geulah Shele’imah from Mitzrayim.

The Even Ezra (See Peleh Yoetz “DaAga”) says “HeAvar Ayin” the past is gone. “HaAsid Adayin” the future has not arrived yet. “V’HaHoveh K’Heref Ayin” and the present only takes a split second. Therefore he concludes, “DaAga Minayin?” Why worry, nothing actually matters in the long term. Rav Simcha Zisel Brodie Rosh Yeshiva of Chevron says this sums up the meaning of slavery. A person whose whole life is about caring only about himself and caring only about the moment is a slave. He is trapped in “the moment”.

A free person, he says, cares not only about himself but his concern traverses the entire world, the entire creation. He lives not only the present but also the past and the future. On Pesach we get to exhibit our freedom. Our spirit of freedom soars as we immerse ourselves in years long gone by. We care about the past and we relive it. Our heart rises and falls as we retell the story of the Galus and Geula of Am Yisroel. “Chayav Adam Lir’os Es Atzmo K’Ilu Hu Yatza MiMitztrayim.” By truly feeling as if you have left Mitzrayim you have captured the essence of the seder. You have freed yourself from your own bondage from the slavery of self. (Hagadah Shai L’Torah – Brisk)

The past few months I have heard about two kidney transplants. The latest involved someone whose mother received a kidney from a father of many children who viewed donating a kidney as a happy event. He and his family visited the woman to whom the kidney was being donated and gave much chizuk to her. The medical professionals were amazed that the people visiting the patient weren't related because they were convinced they were family, as they viewed the warm conviviality exhibited between those in the hospital room.
The woman I spoke to said that Mashiach should come just for the fact that the man willingly and happily offered to donate his kidney for a woman in dire need, a total stranger.

An indelible impression

Mishpacha Magazine has an article about Dr.Yashar Hirshaut, a "top-notch oncologist."
I don't have access to the full article so I'm not sure if anything was written about the exemplary fashion in which he honored his mother. I was witness to his walking to shul in Lawrence with his aging mother. He carried a chair with him and every so often he would stop and set the chair on the ground so that his mother would be able to rest before continuing on her walk to the synagogue on Shabbat. The sight left an indelible impression on my mind and serves as a paradigm of how to fulfill the mitzvah of kibbud av va'em.

2 symbolic items

"Then shall the Kohen command to take for the person to be cleansed two living clean birds, and cedar-wood and red wool, and hyssop."

Why does the Metzora specifically take these items? Rashi explains, since he spoke Lashon HaRa and was high and haughty like a cedar tree, he must lower himself like a worm (Tolaas) and a hyssop (Aizov). Maskil L'David asks, why is it necessary for him to use 2 symbolic items to bring him to humility - the Tolaas Shani and the Aizov - wouldn't it have driven home the point with one?

Maskil L'David explains, although by other character traits, we say that a person should take the middle of the road, not going to an extreme on either end of the spectrum, however concerning Gaavah Chazal tell us "Miod Miod Havay Shfal Ruach" - one should be exceedingly humble. It is for that reason that 2 signs of humbleness were used - to stress that the Metzora should be exceedingly humble to atone his sin.

The color of purity

VIDEO: Parnassah Network Founder R’ Duvy Honig: Let’s Wake Up

The Gemara (Sanhedrin 97) says that Moshiach will come when every government in the world turns to Apikursus. Rava says, "We see it from the pasuk (Tazria 13:13) 'Kulo Hafach Lavan Tahor Hu;' when a nega spreads through a person's entire body he is tahor." What is the connection?

Rav Shamshon Rephael Hirsch says that white is a distinguished color, the color of purity, righteousness, and innocence. It is the color of a special breed. When every country turns to Apikursus and cloak themselves in righteousness, only then will Moshiach come and spread true purity on the world.

State Department Spokesperson Mark Toner was asked about the Saudi book fair at today's briefing.

QUESTION: So were you guys aware of the content of what was in all of the stalls at this book fair? And if so, why was that okay?

MR TONER: So, first of all, this is a – actually, first of all, we condemn anti-Semitism in all of its forms, as well as any other hate speech. Second is representatives of the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh have participated in the International Riyadh Book Fair for multiple years as part of an effort to essentially distribute books to Saudi citizens that include books about democracy, tolerance, diversity, human rights, et cetera. The book fair itself is run by the Saudi Government’s Ministry of Culture and Information. So what I want to clearly state is we were just a participant. We weren’t aware that these books were going to be featured in this book fair. So we’re not a partner, we’re not a funder, we’re not a sponsor. We’re just simply a participant and we obviously, as I said, condemn any kind of anti-Semitic literature.

Reuters Corrects Ridiculous Photo Caption On Palestinian Stabbing

In 2015, Andrea Peyser wrote an opinion piece in the New York Post titled, "Taxpayers should not be funding this anti-American hate-spewer." Ms. Peyser wrote about how Linda Sarsour's organization had received more than $164,050 of city funds since 2012.

Well, I guess noone asked Andrea Peyser for her opinion as evidenced by an article published on April 2.

City First Lady Chirlane McCray is handing over more than $500,000 to an Arab-American activist who came under fire for denouncing critics on Twitter as “Zionist trolls.” http://nypost.com/2016/04/02/city-gives-500k-to-activist-at-center-of-palestine-israel-twitter-war/

Check out this tweet by Ms. Sarsou from a few years ago. Nothing is creepier than Zionism.Challenge racism,...

On Facebook, Ms. Sarsour links to a video where she spoke at the launch of New York's Bernie Sanders campaign, "I am honored as a Palestininan American to support a candidate who somehow has this radical idea that Palestinians are humans and deserve dignity and human rights."

She also posted about an article in which a Muslim woman told police she was slashed in the face by someone calling her a terrorist.

ABC reported that the womand admitted to making up the story.
"Authorities say she has a history of cutting herself dating back to when she was a teenager, and that surveillance video recovered from the Make-Up Designory school at 65 Broadway shows her entering a bathroom on the 15th floor. When she came out, she had a cut on her face.

The woman admitted what happened when detectives confronted her with the video. Detectives also interviewed family members, who told them of her history."

When someone instructed Ms. Sarsour, "Update status to reflect updated article at the end of posted link. Hoax. Woman admits she lied and slash is self-inflicted,".she responded, "They were interrogating her till 11pm at night. I wouldn't be surprised if she changed the story to get out of there."

Changing headlines

Op-Ed: No, it is not Modern Orthodoxy

This year, ArtScroll brings you two exciting new Haggadah commentaries. They are very different from each other but share the same goal: to make your Seder more memorable, engaging, and meaningful than ever. - See more at: http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/news/headlines-breaking-stories/403379/two-unusual-haggadahs-to-enhance-the-seder.html#sthash.yfdnA4Ps.dpuf

An article in the Daily Mail published on April 2 had the headline, Horrific moment Muslim woman is mown down by grinning far-right activist who then stops to take a PICTURE during anti-Islam rally in the troubled Brussels district of Molenbeek.

The journalist wrote, "Police haven't yet confirmed the woman's current condition, or the motivation behind the crash."
However, even if the police were clueless, the Daily Mail apparently knew the act was committed by a far-right activist.

On April 4th, the article's hedline was edited to read, "Horrific moment Muslim woman is mown down by grinning driver who then stops to take a PICTURE during anti-Islam rally in the troubled Brussels district of Molenbeek."
At the end of the article, The Daily Mail issued a statement, "The headline to a previous version of this article referred to a "far-right activist". The police later confirmed that two men had been arrested, and the story has been updated accordingly."

Breitbart reported earlier today about the incident.
"A hit and run on a Muslim women in Molenbeek this weekend, blamed on ‘far right’ anti-Islam demonstrators, was in fact perpetrated by an allegedly drunk local youth named “Mohamed”.

Muslim school in England teaches hate for Jews, Europe

Answered at Ohel For His Friend

In Parshas Tazria-Mitzora we find five kinds of tzoraas, skin, clothing, head, beard, and house. Rav Itzele Volozhin explains that tzoraas is an exterior sign of internal corruption. Each one of these nega'im correspond to a certain tumah within the person.

1. The tzoraas on the skin shows a constant craving by the person to satisfy his bodily desires with food and other physical pleasures.

2. A nega on his clothing is an indication of the pursuit of material items, whether new clothing or anything else. As soon as something new hits the market, says Rav Itzele, it's out with the old and in with the new.

3. Bad character, corrupt ideology, and haughtiness are plagues of the mind and show up as a nega on the head.

4. Sins of the mouth like Lashon Hara an Rechilus manifest themselves as tzoraas on the beard.

5. The chase after wealth such as real estate result in nega'im on ones house.

Everything is dealt with Mida Kneged Mida. Appropriately the cure for tzoraas is to go to the Kohen. The Kohen is an Ish Tzadik v'Tahor. He will take a deep look at the nega and understand its source. He will then prescribe the correct cure from your sins and help you cleanse your inside and as a result your outside.

Above is a screenshot of results I got when I googled about a woman who said she was slashed yesterday. The Daily News initially reported the story with the headline Muslim Woman, 20, slashed in the face and called 'terrorist' in lower Manhattan. It has now been changed to  Woman admits she lied about being slashed in face, called ‘terrorist’ in lower Manhattan. Notice, the inclusion of a religion when the person is the supposed victim of a hate crime and the omission of a religion in the headline when the person is no longer the victim. Was her story added to the hate crime statistics of a certain religion?

ABC initially had the headline Muslim woman slashed in face by man who called her a terrorist. It has now been updated to WOMAN WHO SAID SHE WAS SLASHED IN FACE MADE UP STORY.

Huffington Post, so far, hasn't updated the story.

A comment posted under the article reads, "This is so sad to hear. It fits right in with Trumps dangerous rhetoric. We need to stand together and resist the hate speach that encourages this type of behavior. Vote democrat, prevent this type of behavior."
Will the person who posted the comment change it to, "So sad to hear. This fits in with the lying rhetoric of some politicians. Vote republican, prevent this type of behavior."
