Eyes Ahead

The Jewish Imperative of the coronavirus crisis

It is well know that the word Oneg or pleasure has the same exact letters as the word Nega as in Tzoraas. Pleasure gone afoul can turn into a catastrophe. Rav Eliyahu Lopian points out the difference between the two. "In the word Oneg, the letter Ayin is the first letter and Ayin means eye. HaChacham Einav B'Rosho, a wise man has his eyes ahead of him. He studies the ramifications of his actions before he does anything, and gains satisfaction from his carefully thoguht out deeds.

In the word Nega the letter Ayin is last. A fool first acts and only then does he see with his own eyes the damage that his impulsiveness wrought. When he finally gets hit in the face with reality and opens up his eyes, he will see a Nega."(Pninim MiShulchan Gavoa)
