All for the Boss

The following is a book review of All for the Boss which was written many years ago by Ruchama Shain.

"There’s a reason this book is a classic bestseller—it touches the hearts of readers the world over, from a wide range of audiences and backgrounds. Now newly revised and expanded, this is the inspiring story of the life and impact of R' Yaakov Yosef Herman, a Torah pioneer in America, as told by his loving daughter, Rebbetzin Ruchama Shain. With uncompromising firmness expertly mixed with unwavering love and devotion, R’ Herman lived his life like a soldier in G-d’s Army, his every action dedicated solely as “all for The Boss”. This powerful book enchants and uplifts the reader, taking us back in time to glimpse a portrait of the great personalities of yesteryear."

This morning I bumped into a woman on the street who is not religious. We always have interesting conversations and today we exchanged new year's greetings. She asked me which synagogue I would be attending for the High Holidays and I asked her the same question. She told me that she thought she would end up at a certain neighborhood synagogue but she wasn't sure.
"My husband wants to rest. He is tired of waking up at 6 o'clock most mornings to go to work and would like to take the opportunity to rest so I'm not sure if we will be attending shul."
I thought with dismay of her children who would learn the lesson that prayer is not important. While their father is conveying the message of the importance of earning money and how one must physically tax oneself in order to please the boss, no such effort has to be made in order to please the Big Boss, the One who ultimately determines whether somebody will have a job, health etc.
